Mental Well Being in the times of Pandemic

 Pic Courtsey - https://www.unicef.org/serbia/en/how-protect-your-mental-health-during-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic

Corona has disrupted lives of many. It is often known in HR circles that Corona is the real disruptor that caused Digital Transformation in most companies. Even those companies that had no work from home policy had to prepare themselves to enable employees to work from home overnight during lockdown. Some businesses thrived , some tumbled and some closed shops forever. I was in discussion with a SME Business owner, he made revenue of 5 crores in 3 months time period. Talk about being at the right place at right time and ability to make things happen. He is the Trusted go to person for many businesses, being in IT Infrastructure, he catered to business needs and solved complex problems innovatively.

I did a random survey on twitter to find out how Corona impacted work and lives of people . 50% said that it increased their workload.25% said their partners shared the workload. For singles, it meant doing all the chores and extending work hours. People dwelling in cities learnt to become independent and not be dependent on househelp .

Mental Health became a priority for organisations Organisations expected Employees to bring best version of themselves at work.
Managers had to learn how to be more empathetic to their teams to provide good employee experience .

“If I talk about my company then the support extended by them was excellent. We went to work from home model even one week before the govt declared the lockdown. We are still working from home. No salary cuts. They send regular mails to us mentioning that they have our back. “ @Parul_RajeevM on twitter

“Mine is comparatively small company set up (US based IT company) while my husband works at a senior position in an IT giant (Indian) but his  company has cut the variable component from salary of all the employees in his band “

Professionals had to deal with job losses, salary cuts. While others were lucky to retain their jobs. According to one estimate , 2.5 crore Job loss are estimated due to Covid in India alone. That number doesn’t count labor in informal economy . The hospitality and travel sector were worst affected. Every day I receive resumes by professionals who are looking for jobs . This added on anxiety to already stressed out lives. Mental health professionals were in much demand. People did not know how to deal with loneliness brought upon by epidemic.
Mental Health conversations were brought to the fore. Some of the celebrities committed suicide due to lack of work and lack of social support.

Coming back to Mental Health , kids had to go through a lot as they couldn’t go out to play.

See this brilliant ad by Cadbury's how parental pressure affects kid's Mental Health

Kids and Teachers had to learn new skills to study and teach online respectively. All of a sudden, people were required to spend uncountable number of hours online for learning, shopping, entertainment, staying in touch with colleagues, friends, family, parents.

People had no option for Digital Detox but to remain online for living lives . Technology connect us all but also isolates us in indirect manner.  This caused a heavy toll on mental well being of people.

“The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may be stressful for people. Fear and anxiety about a new disease and what could happen can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults and children. Public health actions, such as social distancing, can make people feel isolated and lonely and can increase stress and anxiety. “ - CDC.GOV

Fear isn’t over yet. Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones, your financial situation still concerns most people. But there is Hope. Thank God there are vaccines which are available in market now. We just have to make informed decision on which vaccine one must take. Vaccine politics is going on, consuming too much negative news also adds on to anxiety.

Regarding Mental Health conversations, always a good thing to stay connected with community which offers solidarity and understand your mental health challenges in a non judgemental manner and through safe space.

I discovered one such space on Clubhouse hosted by Sonam Mahajan . She has warmth , grace and empathy. Her club on Clubhouse  envisions to enhance individual and collective wellbeing by improving mental health.

HR Leaders are attempting to normalise MentalHealth conversations at workplace after learning lessons from Pandemic.

In total, poor #mentalhealth was estimated to cost the world #economy approximately $2·5 trillion per year in poor health and reduced productivity in 2010, a cost projected to rise to $6 trillion by 2030 - Source WEF

We have had enough of 2020 . Thank God it’s over.
Darkest night has brightest dawn .
Human Resilience to bounce back from setbacks is amazing. I am hopeful, 2021 will bring upon new hopes, dreams  and people will come up with new ways to live more balanced healthier lives.

Existential Crisis

Existential Crisis . How old are you ?
40.
Yes I Suffer from Existential Crisis at the age of 40.

According to wikipedia

"Existential crises are moments when individuals question whether their lives have meaning, purpose, or value. It may be commonly, but not necessarily, tied to depression or inevitably negative speculations on purpose in life (e.g., "if one day I will be forgotten, what is the point of all of my work?"

So, do you suffer from Depression ?

Yes I do . And I am on medication from last several years.

I was on vacation at one of the most beautiful places on earth , in India, ie Kerala last month. I had a beach view facing room and all the beauty in the world didn’t have any effect on me . I was lying on my bed numb  , unable to read books that I had piled up to read during vacation. I was invited as Speaker to be on a panel by NHRD  ( HR body ) which I declined . My confidence was at an all time low.  This is sometimes how depression manifests itself.

I have a dream life , I choose to do meaningful work  with people I enjoy working with,  mentor IIT & IIM Students, young women, do Public speaking on HR, Digital, Gender Equality - a cause close to my heart,  Travel to offbeat destinations, have loving family and friends who care , yet here I was lying numb , struggling to breathe, questioning the purpose of my existence and thinking what difference does it make even when “ I have it all “

After much contemplation, I decided to reach out  and seek help from a friend who is a psychologist and counsellor.
I shared my ordeal with her. I was having an anxiety attack.  She calmed me down and shared few practical tips to manage Anxiety attack.

Why I am sharing all of this with Community  ? Because after living for couple of years with guilt and shame of having #MentalIllness , I decided somethings gotta change. Our Society is opening up and there shouldn’t be any  stigma  related to #MentalHealth. Even Bollywood is making movies on the topic ( even though crappy movies like  JudgementalHaiKya which fail to educate or entertain both  ) , I would rather Watch The Beautiful Mind to get educated how Mental Heath affects lives of people.

#MentalHealthAwareness is a topic I lend my voice to because it is a topic which strikes reality closer home. If you are suffering in isloation, please dont. Unmute yourself, speak up, seek help. Fortis Healthcare has a 24 by 4 helpline for people in distress. There is app and chatbot that can offer initial help to people in distress called Wysa buddy.

Dont be judgemental about people who suffer from #mentalhealth issues. They are people like you and me and sometimes have a bit too much on their plate.

Lets be kind, offer empathy, hugs to each other . For everyone you know might be fighting a battle you know nothing about.

Let the world heal one hug, one smile at a time. Amen !

Self - Actualisation

Recently, I met an interesting Woman who have achieved Career Peak. She is the Head of the Department. She groomed her successor and then quit her high profile job for lack of challenge in the role.
Been there, done that. You know.
What could inspire her , challenge her next ? She is driven, and enterprising.
I suggested her to go for a startup venture since she is a Servant Leader.
She confessed, she is a Hermit ( which resonated with me ) and at times she experience
Existential Crisis ( which resonated even more )
Lot of similarities except the fact that I haven’t reached Peak in my Career yet.
Talking of Careers, I heard from a Respectable Leader -  Careers are sometimes balls of yarn rather than Career Ladder.
That’s what my  Career has been all these years – A ball of Yarn.
What is Existential crisis ? What causes it ? And what is the solution .
A problem solver as I am, my theory is the antidote to Existential Crisis is Systems of Engagement.
A system of engagement could be –
  1. Love
  2. Movie
  3. Book
  4. Social Media ( Facebook, Twitter, Linkdedin)
  5. Social Networking
  6. Friends
  7. Family
  8. Conversation with strangers
  9. Writing
  10. Research
  11. Parenting
  12. Music
  13. Art
  14. Trekking
  15. Travel
  16. Running, Jogging, Walking
  17. Gym or Fitness Regime
  18. Meditation or Mindfulness ( this requires a separate discussion altogether )
  19. Paid Work
  20. Voluntary Meaningful Non Paid work, Mentoring, Community Service

When you aren’t engaged with any one of the above, you experience Existential Crisis.
Bingo.
Problem Solved.
My 2nd theory –  Fall in Love, Travel or Write a Book or do any of the above  to evade Existential Crisis.
Prince Hamlet experiences an existential crisis as a result of the death of his father. This is shown especially by Shakespeare in the famous soliloquy which starts, "To be, or not to be: that is the question..."
That begs the question – Do people who suffer from Existential Crisis  experience Positive Disintegration ? And as a result do they Self Actualize faster ?

An existential crisis is a moment at which an individual questions the very foundations of their life: whether their life has any meaning, purpose, or value.[1] This issue of the meaning and purpose of existence is the topic of the philosophical school of existentialism.

No wonder I am drawn to Philosophy by Neitzche

Does Philosophy make us a better Leader ?

The richness of inner, rational beauty always spreads and deepens  ~ Nietzsche

An instant smile gleams through my face when I hear this bollywood song " Philosophy ka craze hai, Kehti hai yeh ik phase hai " as if LYRICS were written exclusively for me. "

At 35, in the quest for Truth and self discovery, to interrogate myself, my way of Living, answer questions about Morality, Free Will ,  I  discovered and took to reading deeper and original Philosophers eg Nietzsche, David Humes et al to be a different kind of person. Once you believe in Growth mindset ( Carol Dweck ) , you tend to believe you are not carved in stone and can evolve as you will.
I believe PHILOSOPHY is utmost for an EXAMINED LIFE .

An unexamined Life is not worth Living -  Socrates

Philosophy answers lots of big questions about LIFE & once you  gain further understanding you tend to develop an inner compass to sail through various situations in LIFE.
